A conversation with a friend this afternoon convinced me--I need to come clean with my views on abortion. This is not a political blog, but I'm going to cross the line just on this one issue.
When folks see my Obama bumper sticker, they assume I'm a Democrat and a liberal. I think I probably give off that "vibe", as the hippies used to say, anyway.
And they'd be pretty much right. But not entirely. I have a deep and dedicated conservative streak. And one place that streak manifests itself is on the abortion issue.
Briefly, I am a pro-life liberal. But I do not favor the repeal of Roe v. Wade.
I am pro-life because I believe the fetus is a person and deserves legal protection. I am a feminist, and I believe that abortion is an assault on a woman's body, and that no woman who was confident of being completely well-cared-for and loved during and after her pregnancy would choose an abortion.
I do not favor the repeal of Roe v. Wade because it would create a horrible mess.
I favor abortion prevention. This would include a lot of different things, but would focus on exquisitely wonderful care for all women.
Unfortunately, there is no political group that advocates this middle road. There is no "March to Prevent Abortion by Taking Better Care of Pregnant Women."
